Action Teams to Help Afghan Women
Action Teams to Help Afghan Women will respond to the current
women's rights and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and
Pakistan. Because of the devastating situation for Afghan
women and girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan, we have broadened
the mission of our Back to School Campaign in order to address
not only the need for educational opportunities for Afghan
women and girls, but also their health needs and the dire
conditions in the region.

What
You Can Do
By forming an action team made up of your friends, neighbors,
colleagues or family members, you can make a difference
in the future of Afghan women and girls. Your action team
can help in two major ways:
- Providing direct assistance to Afghan women-led organizations
that provide health, education, training, and/or relief
services.
- Participating in petition drives to urge the U.S. to do
everything in its power to restore the rights of women and
girls in Afghanistan, to provide increased funding for humanitarian
and reconstruction programs, and to ensure that Afghan women
play a leadership role in the rebuilding of Afghanistan.
The
Current Humanitarian Crisis
Women have been the first victims of the Taliban. Wherever
the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, they banned women
from working, prohibited women and girls from attending school,
and forbid women from leaving their homes without the accompaniment
of a close male relative and the head-to-toe burqa shroud.
Women who violate Taliban decrees have been beaten, imprisoned,
or even killed. Afghan women and girls pleaded with the world
to free them from the grips of the brutal Taliban militia
and warned that the Taliban's threat to
humanity would extend beyond the borders of Afghanistan.
For years, the Feminist Majority Foundation also has been
urging a substantial increase in humanitarian aid for women
and girls in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees, 75% of which
are women and children. Humanitarian assistance
is provided through United Nations agencies, international
NGOs and Afghan women's organizations.
We must press for the establishment of democracy and the
inclusion of women leaders in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
The restoration of constitutional democracy in Afghanistan
is the only means by which Afghan women will ever gain their
freedom and long-term global security can ever be achieved.
At the same time that terrorism is eliminated, the full
rights of women must be restored and commitments must be made
to provide humanitarian assistance and to help rebuild the
economy and democratic infrastructure of Afghanistan. The
rebirth of a peaceful, stable, and democratic Afghanistan
must include Afghan women.
